How to use the word search in class
It teaches no new content, and that is not what it is for. What it does well is fix vocabulary and give the class a task that starts and finishes on its own, which is worth a lot when you need ten minutes.
When it earns its place
- Vocabulary review before a test: the words on the list are exactly the ones you want remembered next week.
- A warm-up for the first ten minutes, while the class arrives and you sort out everything else.
- For whoever finishes early. One sheet in the drawer solves the student who is done in half the time and starts chatting.
- Substitute lessons: you can hand it out without knowing the class, and the child works out the rule alone.
Building a sheet that works
- Twelve to sixteen words on a grid of 14 usually sits comfortably. The ceiling is 24, but a full grid really does become alphabet soup.
- Very short words disappear among the others by accident. The 6 to 10 letter ones are what a child actually hunts.
- Diagonals raise the difficulty sharply. From the 4th grade up they challenge; in early literacy they tend to stall.
- Accents and spaces leave the grid automatically, but the printed list keeps the word as you typed it. The child hunts MERCURIO and reads “Mercúrio”, which is what should stick.
When you print
- The word list prints on the same sheet, under the grid. No second page needed.
- It comes out in black and white on purpose, to spare the school's colour quota.
- Two classes, two titles: the grid is seeded from the title, so changing it reshuffles the letters.
Take the others too
The sheet is ready.
